Nearly 30 years later, justice served in Tupac Shakur murder
By Ihuoma Inyama
Justice has come nearly three decades after the murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, with Duane “Keffe D” Davis sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the fatal 1996 shooting.
His family
Davis, 63, was sentenced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in Las Vegas after a jury convicted him in August of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon for orchestrating the 1996 killing.
He received two consecutive 20-year-to-life sentences for the murder and deadly weapon enhancement.
Tupac, one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in Las Vegas. He died six days later at the age of 25, leaving behind a career that had already made him a global music icon.
The murder remained unsolved for decades until Davis became central to the investigation through his own public admissions, interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. Prosecutors argued that although Davis did not pull the trigger, he organised the retaliatory attack and supplied the weapon.
Davis was arrested in September 2023, becoming the only person ever charged in connection with Shakur’s killing.
During Tuesday’s sentencing, Judge Carli Kierny emphasised that Davis could not escape responsibility simply because decades had passed.
“You don’t get to take a man from his family,” Kierny said, adding that the world had never forgotten Shakur.
Davis, who received credit for 731 days already served, plans to appeal his conviction, according to his defence attorney Michael Sanft.
After almost three decades of unanswered questions, the sentence marks a major development in one of the most notorious unsolved killings in music history and a reminder that justice can still come years after a crime.
