Nollywood film targets Guinness World Record with 50,000-person premiere

Rixel Studios has unveiled its latest feature film, Black Market, starring Lateef Adedimeji and Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, with plans to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest film screening at a single venue.

The film, the studio’s second feature following its 2025 debut Red Circle, was written by Abdul Tijani-Ahmed and Fatimah Gimsay. It is scheduled for release on September 26, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.

In a statement made available to Saturday Beats, Rixel Studios said the premiere would be more than a conventional film screening, as the producers aim to attract 50,000 attendees in an official bid to break the Guinness World Record for the largest film screening in one location.

According to the organisers, the record attempt is being undertaken in collaboration with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production. If successful, it would surpass the current record of 43,000 attendees.

Speaking on the project, Rixel Studios’ team lead, Nora Awolowo, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to pushing creative boundaries.

“We are excited to embark on this journey as a team, and we have taken many lessons from our previous film. As young filmmakers, one of our goals is to continue finding innovative ways to tell stories and create unique experiences,” she said.

Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Studios, Ladun Awobokun, described the planned record attempt as an opportunity to showcase Nollywood’s growing global influence.

“We are incredibly excited. This is more than a film project. It is an opportunity to make history while showcasing Nigerian creativity and Nollywood on the global stage,” Awobokun said.

Directed by Fatimah Gimsay and shot in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Black Market features an ensemble cast including Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Itele D Icon, Scarlet Gomez, Omowunmi Dada, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Uzor Arukwe, Folagade Banks, Tomiwa Tegbe, Andrew Bunting, Shamz Garuba and Adeoluwa Akintoba.
