One killed, several injured in fresh communal clash over farmland in Cross River

A renewed communal clash over a long-standing land dispute in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State has claimed the life of a farmer and left several others injured, raising fresh concerns over recurring violence in the area.

The attack reportedly occurred along a disputed farming boundary, where armed assailants allegedly ambushed farmers who had gone to clear their farmlands for the current planting season.

According to local sources, the gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting farmers, killing one man on the spot while several others sustained gunshot wounds and injuries inflicted with sharp objects as they fled the scene.

The injured victims were evacuated to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The incident has disrupted farming activities in the affected communities, with many residents reportedly fleeing their homes over fears of further violence. Commercial and agricultural activities in parts of the area were also temporarily halted following the attack.

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said security personnel have been deployed to restore calm and prevent further clashes.

In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson said tactical operatives had been stationed at identified flashpoints within Biase Local Government Area to maintain law and order.

“The Command has deployed tactical security operatives to the affected communities to de-escalate the situation and prevent any reprisal attacks. A full-scale investigation has commenced, and we appeal to community leaders and residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies,” the police spokesperson said.

Authorities believe the latest violence is linked to a long-running dispute over ownership of fertile agricultural land in the area.

Security analysts note that communal conflicts in parts of Cross River are often fueled by competition for arable farmland, particularly areas suitable for cultivating high-value cash crops such as cocoa and oil palm.
