Pat Utomi opens up on 2027 election, warns of possible revolt
Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of allegedly plotting to manipulate the 2027 general elections, warning that growing public anger could trigger widespread protests or revolt.
Utomi made the allegations in a statement published on his verified X handle on Tuesday, expressing concern over what he described as inconsistencies in the electoral commission’s approach to technology and election transparency.
He accused INEC of expressing reservations about technology when it comes to uploading election results to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), while allegedly relying on technological systems that could compromise the credibility of the voters’ register.
According to him, Nigerians are increasingly frustrated with the electoral process, warning that the situation could escalate if the commission fails to address concerns surrounding the integrity of the register.
“The people are angry everywhere,” Utomi said, adding that he could hardly walk through an airport without being approached by Nigerians expressing their dissatisfaction.

He claimed that some citizens were threatening to take the law into their own hands if INEC continued along what he described as a dangerous path.
The political economist called on all political parties to unite in demanding a credible, clean and transparently displayed voters’ register ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also appealed to the international community, particularly organisations and countries supporting Nigeria’s electoral process, to intervene by drawing INEC’s attention to the potential consequences of actions that could undermine public confidence.
Utomi went further to describe the alleged electoral manipulation as the moral equivalent of genocide, urging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to be prepared to prosecute INEC officials, from clerical personnel to the commission’s chairman, if evidence establishes criminal responsibility.
In his words, “INEC planning to rig 2027 elections, Nigerians may revolt.
“They may have read Stalin that it is not those who vote but those who count the vote that determine elections, but they may be about to learn that those who miscount the votes may be statistics of revolutions stoked by the anger of the people.”
His comments come amid continuing public debate over electoral transparency, electronic transmission of results and the credibility of Nigeria’s voter registration system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, Utomi’s allegations remain claims and do not, on their own, establish that INEC is planning to rig the forthcoming elections.
