Pregnant migrant dies in abandoned truck
A pregnant migrant from Nicaragua who was abandoned in a truck conveying 160 migrants died on transit in Mexico. The migrants were said to be conveyed by human traffickers in northern Mexico. Mexican authorities said the woman died while abandoned in the truck.
Officials revealed that the pregnant migrant died on Saturday night in the city of Monclova in the state of Coahuila, within the borders of the United States.
According to Deputy Security Minister Ricardo Mejia, the migrants “were rescued in unbearable conditions,” among them was “a pregnant woman who unfortunately lost her life.”
The National Migration Institute (INM) also disclosed that 14 migrants of various nationalities were hospitalized after the rescue operations.
The National Migration Institute noted that the migrants were traveling in a truck container “presumably crowded together, without water or ventilation and with an apparent temperature of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).”
The 64 migrants rescued by the authorities were identified to include Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Guatemalans, and Cubans; they were all assured of being granted humanitarian visas. About 100 other migrants were said to have fled.
