Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday berated southern governors for abandoning their own at the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, accusing them of betrayal. He decried the lack of cooperation among southern politicians while northern politicians cooperate as a team. Wike chided southern governors for making themselves tools used against their own people. The Rivers governor mocked the southern governors that they have lost rather than winning.
Wike at a reception at the Government House, Port Harcourt after he returned from the PDP presidential primary election in Abuja, declared: “Shame to those who will sell out their own. I have never seen a thing like that.
“No wonder we cannot move on with development. Look at, a region ganged up. Then, your own region cannot gang up.
“You became a tool to be used against the interest of your people; and you think you have won? You have lost.”
Governor Wike maintained that though he lost the PDP presidential ticket at the convention, his performance has raised the political profile of Rivers State and other minority groups in Nigeria.
The governor declared that “In the political history of this country, you can count on us. We are not pushovers.”
Before the PDP national convention, Governor Wike was canvassing for the unity of the PDP. He met many stakeholders in the PDP, talking with them on the need for in the party to enable the PDP wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections. Wike declared that “without unity, the PDP cannot defeat APC in 2023.”
The governor also promised that he will support whoever emerges as the PDP presidential candidate at the party’s national convention.
