Plateau State Assembly calls for increased funding for fire service
The Plateau State House of Assembly has called for increased funding for the state’s fire service to enhance firefighting response and infrastructure.
The Plateau State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Gabriel Dewan, has urged the state government to allocate adequate funding to the Plateau State Fire Service.
The call came after a motion was raised by Mr. Abel Nimchak (APC, Langtang North North) during the assembly’s plenary session in Jos on Monday.
Nimchak highlighted the critical role of the fire service in responding to fire emergencies and extinguishing fires across the state.
He emphasized that the service urgently requires adequate funding to reduce response times and enhance its effectiveness in tackling fire outbreaks.
The lawmaker pointed out the increasing frequency of fire incidents, citing a troubling statistic of 35 fire outbreaks in November alone.
He explained that additional funds would enable the fire service to acquire more firefighting vehicles, modern communication systems, and advanced firefighting equipment to better address fire outbreaks.

“The funds would help in the procurement of necessary firefighting vehicles and equipment, as well as the recruitment and training of staff,” Nimchak said. “This will also support the upgrade of fire service infrastructure, including both the headquarters and outstations that house the equipment, fire trucks, and personnel.”
Nimchak further emphasized the importance of ensuring that all ministries, departments, agencies, and property owners—both public and private—have functional firefighting equipment on-site to prevent and respond to fire incidents.
