University of Benin defends prizes awarded to top-performing students
“The attention of the Management of the University of Benin has been drawn to reports regarding the supposed meagre prizes awarded to some of the University’s best performing students,” Ehanire stated. “The University explains that while the awards were sponsored by public-spirited individuals over 50 years ago, the primary objective has always been to recognize and reward excellence, rather than being driven by monetary considerations.”
The University of Benin has defended the prizes awarded to its top-performing students at the recent convocation ceremony, addressing concerns about the perceived modest value of the awards.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, the university’s Public Relations Officer, explained that the prizes, although modest, were designed to recognize and reward academic excellence.
Ehanire clarified that the awards have been sponsored by well-meaning individuals over the last 50 years, with the primary objective being to honor exceptional academic achievements.
She emphasized that the focus of the prizes has always been on the recognition of excellence rather than the monetary value attached to them.
