Reasons why many people are battling with Hepatitis B virus infection
Many people do not know that some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like HBV have no cure hence engage in unprotected sexual affairs which have severe consequences. Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is a very common illness affecting millions of people globally. The virus is often spread through semen, blood or other bodily fluids
If you contract HBV, your body fights against the virus and you will be free in about 6 months, however if you still have the virus after that period of time, you may have to live with it for life. Many people are still contracting this disease (about 1.5 million per year in Nigeria), you may ask, Why is it spreading so fast? In this article, I’ll like to enlighten you about reasons why hepatitis B Virus continues to ravage our society according to Mayo Clinic.
1. Many people are engaging in unprotected sex
The virus can enter your blood stream when you come in contact with an infected person’s blood, semen, saliva or vaginal secretions usually during sexual affairs. This is why you should always use protection when having intercourse
2. Sharing of needles and sharp objects
Many people think HBV is only transmitted trough sexual activities, this is untrue as this virus can be contracted when you share needles and syringes which is contaminated with an infected blood. People who share IV drug paraphernalia have higher risk of having hepatitis B
3. Mother to child transmission
Many pregnant who are infected with the virus pass it to their new born babies during child delivery. The new born baby has to be vaccinated to prevent having the disease. This is why it is necessary to go for regular check up as a pregnant woman or a woman who wants to get pregnant to get early diagnosis of the virus
