Rivers: Kalu urges Judiciary to uphold integrity amid politically motivated turmoil

Chief Emeka Kalu, the National Coordinator of the PDP Coalition, has called for caution and integrity from the judiciary as it navigates a series of contentious legal decisions that threaten to undermine democratic processes.

A recent ruling from the Abuja Federal High Court has directed the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to halt the release of statutory monthly allocations to the Rivers State government.

This judgment has raised alarm bells among observers, who argue that it reflects political bias aimed at destabilizing the administration of Governor Sim Fubara.

Kalu condemned the ruling, asserting that it exemplifies a blatant disregard for the will of the people and serves the interests of political entities seeking to sow discord.

“It is an egregious injustice for any political party to exploit the legal system for personal gain,” he stated, urging the judiciary to act as a guardian of democratic principles rather than a pawn in political games.

He emphasized that the law must be upheld, particularly in light of Section 109(ig) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that lawmakers who defect from their sponsoring parties forfeit their seats.

Kalu argued that the government’s essential functions should not be disrupted due to the legal void created by these defections.

Amidst Nigeria’s current economic challenges, Kalu warned that failure to address the situation could lead to rising crime rates as citizens, frustrated by their circumstances, resort to desperate measures.

He firmly believes that Fubara’s administration, which has taken significant steps to support the workforce—including the approval of an 85,000 Naira minimum wage—should be recognized for its positive impact rather than unjustly targeted.
