Saudi-backed Forces capture suspected Houthis in failed piracy attempt
Saudi-allied government forces have reportedly captured a group of Houthi militants accused of attempting to seize cargo from a commercial vessel transiting the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The suspected militants were intercepted while allegedly carrying out the piracy operation against the vessel, according to reports.
Government forces reportedly took the group into custody after foiling the attempted seizure and recovered the commodities allegedly targeted by the attackers. The recovered goods were subsequently returned to their owners, while the captured suspects were transferred to a government-controlled port, where they are expected to face legal proceedings.
A government official, speaking on the development, alleged that the Houthis intended to use the seized commodities to support their military campaign.
The official further claimed that the group’s efforts to obtain resources through such operations were linked to a reported decline in Iranian financial support amid continuing United States sanctions.
The incident highlights renewed security concerns around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime corridor connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and one of the world’s key routes for commercial shipping.

Any attempt to seize commercial vessels or their cargo in the area could heighten risks for international shipping and further complicate efforts to maintain the security of vessels navigating the Red Sea region.
The capture of the suspected militants also comes against the backdrop of the wider conflict involving the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen and Saudi-aligned forces supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
The Houthis have previously been accused of attacks and attempted attacks against commercial shipping in and around the Red Sea, prompting international military and maritime security responses.
Details of the identities of those captured, the vessel involved and the specific commodities allegedly targeted were not immediately disclosed.
The latest operation is expected to draw further attention to maritime security in the Bab el-Mandeb, particularly as commercial shipping continues to face risks associated with Yemen’s prolonged conflict.
