Schmeichel hails Carrick’s substitutions after Man United’s comeback win over Roma

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has praised manager Michael Carrick for making decisive substitutions that helped the Red Devils secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over AS Roma in their Champions League encounter on Tuesday.

Manchester United recovered from a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford to defeat the Serie A side, with Bruno Fernandes scoring once and Matheus Cunha grabbing a brace to complete the comeback.

Schmeichel singled out Carrick’s second-half substitutions, insisting that the players introduced from the bench made a significant difference to United’s performance and ultimately contributed to the victory.

The former Denmark international specifically mentioned Youri Tielemans, Lisandro Martínez, Shea Lacey, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount as players whose introductions positively influenced the game.

Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Schmeichel contrasted Carrick’s changes against Roma with his substitutions during Manchester United’s previous match against Chelsea.

“Michael on Saturday vs. Chelsea made some substitutions that unfortunately did not have any kind of impact on the game,” Schmeichel said.

“Today, he made substitutions [Youri Tielemans, Lisandro Martínez, Shea Lacey, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount] that made an impact.”

Schmeichel’s comments highlighted the importance of effective squad management, particularly in high-pressure European fixtures where tactical adjustments can determine the outcome of a match.

United’s comeback victory will provide a significant boost to Carrick and his players as they prepare for their next assignment against Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend.
