Super Eagles drawn with Tanzania, Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau in Group L for AFCON 2027 qualifiers

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been drawn into Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and co-hosts Tanzania following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) draw held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters.

The draw, which sets the qualification pathway for 48 African nations divided into 12 groups, has placed Nigeria in a seemingly balanced pool on paper but one with a significant structural twist that could complicate their route to the finals.

Unlike standard qualifying groups where the top two teams progress, Group L carries an unusual limitation: only one qualification slot is effectively available for competing teams, due to the presence of Tanzania, one of the automatically qualified co-hosts of the tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda.

Although Tanzania will participate in all group matches, their results will not affect qualification outcomes, meaning Nigeria must outperform both Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau to secure the sole available ticket.

The structure effectively turns the group into a three-team race for one place, leaving little margin for error for the Super Eagles.

The draw has also revived recent rivalries that could pose challenges for Nigeria’s qualification campaign under head coach Eric Chelle.

Guinea-Bissau remain one of Nigeria’s most familiar qualifying opponents in recent cycles. The Djurtus famously stunned the Super Eagles with a 1-0 win in Abuja during the 2023 qualifiers, a result that underscored their ability to frustrate higher-ranked opposition.

Madagascar also bring recent pedigree against Nigeria, having defeated a star-studded Super Eagles side 2-0 during the 2019 AFCON group stage in Egypt, one of the most notable shocks of that tournament.

Tanzania, while already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as co-hosts, remain competitive opposition. Past meetings include a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam during the 2017 qualifiers, before Nigeria edged a narrow 1-0 win in Uyo.

Elsewhere, the draw produced several high-profile group clashes across the continent. Former champions Côte d’Ivoire were paired with regional rivals Ghana in Group C, while Senegal headline Group J alongside Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

AFCON 2027 is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, across East Africa.

For Nigeria, the draw adds renewed pressure following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, placing expectations firmly on the Super Eagles and their coaching setup to deliver a flawless qualification campaign.
