Tinubu celebrates Jim Ovia at 75, hails impact on Nigeria’s economy
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated renowned banker and Zenith Bank founder, Jim Ovia, on his 75th birthday, applauding his contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry, economic development and private-sector growth.
The President described Ovia as a visionary entrepreneur, accomplished banker and distinguished business leader whose entrepreneurial achievements have helped transform the country’s financial services sector and strengthen its private enterprise landscape.
Tinubu’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President particularly praised Ovia’s pioneering role in establishing Zenith Bank in the 1990s and transforming it into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, with a significant presence across the continent and Europe.
According to Tinubu, Ovia’s entrepreneurial vision, resilience and commitment to excellence have not only built a formidable banking institution but also contributed significantly to the expansion of Nigeria’s financial services industry.
“Mr. Ovia’s dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence have not only grown Zenith Bank into a banking behemoth but have also driven the growth of the Nigerian financial services sector,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that Ovia’s business journey demonstrates the importance of innovation, discipline, sound corporate governance and sustained investment in building institutions capable of contributing to national development.
Beyond banking, the President acknowledged the businessman’s contributions to digital infrastructure, education, youth empowerment, philanthropy and human capital development.

He particularly highlighted initiatives associated with Ovia that have created opportunities for young Nigerians to develop their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
The President said Ovia’s influence extends beyond the financial sector, describing his investments in education and youth development as important contributions to Nigeria’s long-term economic and social progress.
As the banking icon celebrates the milestone, Tinubu joined his family, friends, associates and well-wishers in wishing him continued good health, renewed strength and many more years of productive service to Nigeria and humanity.
Ovia’s 75th birthday provides an opportunity to reflect on his journey from banking entrepreneur to one of Nigeria’s most influential financial-sector figures, particularly his role in shaping modern banking through institutional expansion, technological innovation and private-sector investment.
