Forty-five-year-old Philip Ononaku has been arrested as a prime suspect in the murder of his wife of 10 years in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos.
Iyabo’s body was found floating on the Oke Eeri River, around Odo Eran, Friday, two days after her family had been looking for her.
The 48-year-old woman parted ways with Ononaku in 2017, following years of childlessness and domestic abuse, her relatives said.
According to police reports, Ononaku, however, caught her with a new man last Tuesday, leading to a fight between the two men.
Onanaku was said to have been dusted.
The humiliation made him threaten to “deal” with Iyabo, especially after he reported the incident to police who arrested and, later, released Iyabo.
Iyabo’s corpse was found floating three days after, hands tied to the back.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, confirmed Iyabo’s death, and the arrest of Ononaku.
“The man was arrested on the suspicion that he murdered his lover. The deceased was said to have left Philip (Ononaku) for another man. Philip protested against the turn of event and got beaten up by the new lover and his estranged lover.
According to Chike, he reported a case of assault against both parties at the Oworoshoki Police Station, adding that Philip threatened that he would mercilessly deal with Iyabo.
“Now that Iyabo is dead and her relation is pointing an accusing finger at Philip, detectives have been directed by the Commissioner of Police to determine if Philip actually committed the murder as alleged by the complainant or made good his threat to deal mercilessly with the deceased,”
He said the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for further investigation.
