Senate Minority Leader and Former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, CON, a few minutes ago was allowed to go home after about five hours of intense questioning by operatives of the EFCC.
A former aide of the Senate Minority Leader confirmed to National Daily that Akpabio was indeed already in his Abuja residence after he left the EFCC.
It was however not clear what his bail conditions were but it was gathered it was in conformity with the modus operandi of the anti-corruption agency which upholds the tenets of the Rule of Law which presumes everyone innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The former governor had this evening responded to the invitation extended to him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Akpabio who was in the company of a very few of his aides and his lawyer, Mr. Ricky Tafa, SAN, arrived the headquarters of the anti-corruption agency in Abuja at about 5.35pm.
The EFCC operatives who have been investigating allegations of embezzlement of Akwa Ibom State funds by the Akpabio administration brought before the commission by an Abuja-based lawyer Mr. Leo Ekpenyong had invited the former governor to provide answers to some questions regarding his eight years in charge of the state, during which Akpabio’s accusers claimed the Senate Minority Leader corruptly enriched him to the tune of several billions of Naira to the detriment of the state.
As at 10.30pm Nigerian time (about five hours after arrival), the former Akwa Ibom governor was still answering questions and providing clarifications to the issues raised in the petitions and statements by his accusers. Shortly after he was allowed to go home.
The Social Media has been awash with several versions of his presence at the EFCC. While those critical of Akpabio have continued to insist that he was arrested and brought into custody, other in sympathy with the former governor have countered the reports. They are stating rather that Akpabio simply honoured an invitation extended to him by the EFCC as a law-abiding citizen of the country.
It remains to be seen where this will end as the new opposition party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to allege political witch-hunt and persecution of its members by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
