Taliban takes 12th city as US, UK send troops to Kabul

The advancing Taliban took Kandahar in Afghanistan Thursday night, pushing the country’s former allies—the US and UK—into evacuation of their citizens.

The Islamic group has taken 12 out of 34 cities in the country following the pull out of the US and the UK after 20years of upstaging and suppressing the Taliban regime.

The two countries began the pull out in May, and envisaged it might take longer for the Taliban forces to get to Kandahar, their stronghold before the allied forces took it in 2001.

The pace of the advance has howevr prompted the US nad the UK to begin evacuation of their citizens and embassies.

US military officials have told the White House that they believe Kabul could be overrun by the Taliban in as little as 30 to 90 days, officials told The Washington Post.

That is far quicker than an initial US projection that it could take between six and 12 months.

Pentagon has announced it will send in 3,000 troops to help evacuate personnel from the US Embassy in Kabul while the UK will also send 600 troops to help Britons leave.

President Joe Biden said last week the US has done enough for Afghanistan.
