No freedom for Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader, for now – Malami
The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of freedom for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the moment through presidential pardon, saying that pardon is premature at the moment.
Malami speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday argued that “Pardon is a function of conviction in the Nigerian context and as far as I know, Nnamdi Kanu has not been convicted yet; so, the idea of pardoning him is premature.”
Malami maintained that the prosecution of Kanu has not been concluded, insisting that pardoning the IPOB leader cannot be on the table of the federal government yet.
The minister insisting that pardoning Kanu is not on the table at the moment, stated that he is yet to assess the security implications of such a decision after the appeal of Igbo leaders to President Muhammadu Buhari on the premise that pardoning the IPOB leader will restore peace in the southeast.
