Tension in Abuja as Senate gathers 73 signatures to veto Buhari on Electoral Act Amendment

There are emerging indicators of tension from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, over the insinuations that the Senate has gathered 73 signatures to veto President Muhammadu Buhari over his decline to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law. The Senators had after a closed-door session on Tuesday adjourned proceedings to Wednesday to deliberate on the President’s rejection of the Act enacted by the National Assembly.

Senator George Sekibo, member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had in a media interaction on Channels Television on Tuesday, revealed that some Senators were considering vetoing the president on his rejection of the electoral act amendment bill.

The Senator also disclosed that a total of 73 signatures were collected to veto the president.

Sources disclosed that the President’s men in the National Assembly are purportedly plotting to frustrate the veto plan to prevent their principal from disgrace by the lawmakers.

National Daily further gathered that there could be consequences for the leaders of the two chambers of the National Assembly if the federal legislature goes ahead to veto President Buhari. Some of the President’s hatch men were alleged to be plotting a change of leadership of the two chambers if the veto is carried out.

Some other sources from the seat of power also alleged plots for harassment of some of the federal legislators by security operatives and anti-graft agencies. The executive, they said, will have a way of fighting back.

The major controversy has been the infusion of direct primaries for nomination of candidates for elections by political parties.
