Police prosecute businessman for circulating fake N1,000 notes
The Police on Thursday arraigned a 42-year-old businessman, William Sunday, at a Chief Magistrate Court in Kaduna, Kaduna State, for circulating and being in possession of fake N1,000 notes worth N200,000.
The police prosecute Sunday on two counts of possession of counterfeit notes with intent to cheat and causing wrongful loss.
The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, said Sunday committed the offence on November 2 at about 8.5a.m at the Central Market, Kaduna.
Leo told the court that the defendant went to the market to purchase some goods and paid the complainant, Joy Samuel the fake notes mixed with real notes.
The prosecutor said the complainant, who identified the counterfeits, raised an alarm which led to the arrest of the defendant.
Leo said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 134 and 372 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, gadmitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be blood relations to defendant who must be verified by the court’s registrar.
He adjourned the case until Nov. 30 for hearing.
