Unijos begins work-study to boost students welfare – VC says

As part of palliative measures to improve students welfare, the University of Jos has introduced ‘work-study’ to boost students’ welfare, the Vice Chancellor,  Prof. Tanko Ishaya has said.

Ishaya said the efforts became necessary considering the economic hardship faced in the country.

He said the measure however is only for students who are interested in the scheme.

The Vice Chancellor stated this on Thursday, at the University auditorium during a press briefing to intimate journalists on his one year experience as VC.

Ishaya who is the 10th substantive VC of the ivory tower said students and staff welfare will top his priorities while his tenure lasts.

According to him: “We have introduced a work-study programme where interested students are involved in cleaning services and cutting of grasses within the campuses to enhance their means of sustenance while in school”, he said.

The VC said another area of intervention is the welfare of academic and non academic staff, adding that robust relationships exist between management and the various unions in the University.

He continued: “Another cardinal area of our administration is the welfare of our esteemed workforce. We have continued to align with their respective unions with a view to ensuring that the welfare of their members are mainstreamed and sustained within our purview.

“The industrial action that took a chunk of our time this session has hindered some of the actions we had in mind. With the return of normalcy, we shall ensure that our workers are fully motivated and their welfare taken seriously.

“Be that as it may, we have just announced the promotion of over 200 academics to the professorial cadre, 143 Senior and 399 Junior Staff.  The Registry and all complexes are currently working round the clock to ensure that both teaching and non -teaching members of staff who are due for promotion and other forms of career advancements are attended to without delay”, Ishaya said.
