Protest rocks Kano over demolition of structures by Gov Yusuf
Several protesters, under the aegis of the Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative, took to streets of Kano metropolis in the early hours of Monday to agitate the demolition of structures in the state by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Most of the public structures were put in place by former Governor Umar Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, no partisan identity was demonstrated by the protesters, but they, in consensus, demanded a halt to the demolition by the governor.
The protesters, assembling at the site of a demolished Daula Hotel, Kano, displayed placards bearing inscriptions – “Gov Yusuf, your action is sending away investors;
“Don’t bring insecurity to our state, Mr Governor;
“Let the law take its course.” From the hotel, they marched to the police headquarters.
The Convener of the Coalition for Good Governance and Change Initiative, Zahraddeen Sani Baba, on behalf of the protesters, declared: “If the incumbent governor has any issues with his predecessor, we urge him to summon him to answer questions, instead of punishing innocent Nigerians and destroying their investments.”
The NNPP government in Kano had explained that the demolition is being enforced “to restore the Kano Urban Development Master plan, which includes the removal of structures constructed in public spaces.”
The new state government also indicated “commitment to restoring order and adhering to established regulations in allocation of land and property, including construction of structures.”
