FG expresses sympathy over Jeju Air Flight 2216 tragedy in South Korea

The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its condolences to the Government and people of South Korea following the tragic crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216, which resulted in the death of approximately 179 passengers.

In a statement issued on Sunday, December 29, 2024, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian Government expressed deep sympathy with the bereaved families and conveyed its solidarity with South Korea during this devastating incident.

The crash occurred at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, around 288 kilometers southwest of Seoul.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which had departed from Bangkok, Thailand, skidded off the runway upon landing and collided with a barrier before bursting into flames.

Tragically, out of the 181 people on board, 179 have been confirmed dead, leaving only two survivors.

Rescue personnel and emergency responders were seen working at the crash site, as firefighters battled the intense flames following the explosion.

The Nigerian Government described the incident as a “tragic loss” and reaffirmed its support for the South Korean people during this difficult time.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to express her sincere condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Korea for the unfortunate crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216 that occurred on Sunday, December 29th, 2024.

The Federal Government of Nigeria sympathises with the Government of South Korea and the families of the victims of the deadly plane crash,” the statement read.

The Nigerian Government’s message of solidarity underscores the global connection in times of tragedy and reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the people of South Korea in their time of mourning.
