NBA Osogbo condemns Arson attack on Osun High court in Ilesa

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Osogbo branch, has expressed outrage over the arson attack that gutted the Osun State High Court 2 in Ilesa in the early hours of Monday, April 21.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NBA Osogbo Chairman, Mr. Yemi Abiona, described the attack as “a heinous attack that poses a serious threat to justice delivery and the rule of law.”

Abiona voiced deep concern over the recurrence of such incidents, noting that a similar act of arson had occurred years ago in Court 3, where a judge’s chambers were completely destroyed by fire.

“I wonder what the perpetrators of such an attack on the courtroom intended to achieve,” Abiona said. “This attack is the handiwork of faceless cowards and ignorants. Though the cause of this arson is still under investigation, from all indications, the inferno cannot be an act of God.”

He decried the destruction of vital legal documents and exhibits, emphasizing the damage done to the administration of justice in the state.

“We only wonder what the perpetrators intend to achieve by setting fire to courtrooms where documents are kept,” he added.

The NBA commended Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for his prompt reaction, including ordering an investigation into the incident and calling for heightened security around court facilities.

Abiona further pledged the NBA’s support in ensuring justice is served, offering free legal services to aid in the prosecution of the arsonists.

“We urge security agencies to leave no stone unturned in conducting a thorough investigation.

Together, we can uphold the integrity of our justice system,” he concluded.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the fire completely razed the court building, destroying sensitive case files and exhibits.

Governor Adeleke has since directed immediate action to safeguard all court premises in Osun State.
