Chelsea step up managerial search, hold talks with Xabi Alonso
Chelsea FC have intensified their search for a new head coach after holding a direct meeting with former Spain international Xabi Alonso, as the club aims to appoint a manager before the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.
Alonso is understood to be among the leading candidates being considered by the Premier League side, which is keen to conclude its recruitment process swiftly to allow the incoming coach adequate preparation time ahead of the global tournament next month.
Sources close to the process indicate that Chelsea’s shortlist extends beyond Alonso. The club has also engaged in discussions with Andoni Iraola of AFC Bournemouth and Oliver Glasner, currently in charge of Crystal Palace FC.
Additionally, Marco Silva has been contacted as part of what insiders describe as a comprehensive evaluation process by the club’s hierarchy.
Chelsea’s leadership is reportedly assessing tactical philosophy, squad development track record, and long-term project alignment as key criteria in selecting their next manager.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano disclosed via social media platform X that Chelsea’s discussions with Alonso have reached an advanced stage.
“Chelsea have had a direct meeting with Xabi Alonso and final decision is expected very soon,” Romano wrote, adding that talks are accelerating as the club seeks to formalise its appointment before the World Cup begins.
The urgency reflects Chelsea’s desire to stabilise their sporting direction and avoid prolonged uncertainty during a critical period in the football calendar.
With the FIFA World Cup set to draw global attention and disrupt domestic competitions, appointing a manager beforehand would provide Chelsea clarity heading into the next phase of their sporting project.
While no official confirmation has been issued, an announcement is expected in the coming days as the London club moves closer to finalising its choice.
