The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully rescued an 84-year-old man who fell into a deep well in what authorities suspect may have been a suicide attempt.
The dramatic rescue operation took place at No. 35A, Fadeyemi Street, Pipeline, in the Aboru area of Lagos on Wednesday morning.
According to Margaret Adeseye, Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, emergency responders received a distress call at 10:09 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 10:20 a.m.
The elderly man was found trapped in a well estimated to be approximately 140 feet deep. Rescue personnel worked swiftly to extract him from the dangerous depth.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the well had been securely covered before the incident, leading authorities to suspect the fall may not have been accidental. “Preliminary findings indicate that the well had been securely covered, suggesting the fall may have been a suspected suicide attempt,” Adeseye stated.
The rescue team successfully recovered the man alive and handed him over to his family for further medical care and support. His current condition has not been disclosed.
The incident has raised concerns about elderly mental health and the need for family vigilance regarding vulnerable individuals. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The successful rescue highlights the quick response capabilities of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in emergency situations.
