President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to former military president General Ibrahim Babangida (retd) on the occasion of his 85th birthday, hailing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left a lasting imprint on the nation.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Babangida’s military career, noting that it culminated in his ascent to national leadership following the 1985 coup.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said. “He expanded the nation’s economy, established lasting infrastructure, and created several agencies and institutions that continue to serve the national interest. But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today.”
The President added that Babangida’s legacy would remain permanently etched into Nigeria’s history, citing his wide-ranging contributions to the country’s development over the decades.
Tinubu also acknowledged Babangida’s continued relevance beyond his time in office, noting that the former leader still plays an advisory role in national affairs from his home in Minna, Niger State. “Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” he said.
Rounding off his tribute, the President offered well wishes for Babangida’s continued health and longevity: “I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come.”
