US troop drawdown in Nigeria part of evolving security partnership — Military

The Nigerian military has explained that the planned withdrawal of about 200 United States troops from Nigeria is part of the evolving nature of the security partnership between both countries, rather than an indication of a breakdown in bilateral counterterrorism cooperation.

Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the deployment of the American personnel was linked to specific operational and counterterrorism objectives and was designed as a limited engagement.

Uba said the decision to draw down the troops was therefore consistent with the changing nature of the mission and should not be interpreted as an abandonment of Nigeria by the United States.

According to him, critical elements of the Nigeria-US security partnership will continue despite the troop reduction, particularly in intelligence cooperation, training and information sharing.

“The decision to withdraw the 200 troops from Nigeria is part of the evolving nature of that engagement,” Uba said.

The development follows the deployment of approximately 200 US military personnel to Nigeria earlier in 2026 for a limited counterterrorism mission. Under the planned arrangement, the bulk of the American troops is expected to leave by the end of September, while a smaller team comprising advisers and intelligence personnel will remain in the country.

Uba stressed that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain primarily responsible for defending the country and protecting its citizens.

He said Nigeria had never relinquished that responsibility to a foreign military, adding that the presence of US personnel was intended to complement, rather than replace, the capabilities of Nigerian security forces.

“The Nigerian military has been consistent in maintaining responsibility for the defence of Nigeria,” the defence spokesman said, stressing that the protection of Nigerian citizens rests primarily with the country’s security agencies.

He explained that cooperation with the United States was focused on strengthening the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Armed Forces through intelligence sharing, training and other forms of technical and security assistance.

The defence spokesman also maintained that the partnership had contributed significantly to Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism and other transnational security threats.

The planned drawdown has attracted attention amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly the activities of terrorist groups and other armed organisations operating in parts of the country.

However, the military’s explanation suggests that the troop reduction is being treated as a transition in the scope and structure of the bilateral engagement rather than an end to US security support.

Uba said intelligence cooperation, training and information-sharing mechanisms would remain important components of the relationship as both countries continue working together against terrorism and other security threats.

The continued presence of a smaller US advisory and intelligence team is expected to provide a framework for maintaining those aspects of the partnership after the main contingent departs.

The military consequently urged the public to view the troop withdrawal within the context of the broader and evolving Nigeria-US security relationship, rather than as a cessation of American support for Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
