Como renew striker Roberta Picchi’s contract after cancer diagnosis

Como have extended forward Roberta Picchi’s contract until the end of the 2027-28 season after the Italian striker was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 34-year-old is due to begin treatment and will receive support from Como’s medical team, who will work alongside the specialists responsible for her care.

The club saidthe contract extension was part of its “continued commitment” to Picchi as she begins her recovery.

“Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead,” the club said.

“At this time, we ask that Roberta’s privacy is respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery.”

Picchi responded on social media by saying she was grateful for the support and determined to overcome the challenge.

“Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate,” she wrote. “It’s time to play my match, but I’ll be back even more determined.”

Picchi played a key role in Como’s promotion-winning campaign last season, helping the club finish 11 points clear of Lumezzane to win the Serie B title and secure their first promotion to Italy’s top division.

Como, managed by Selena Mazzantini, are preparing for their debut season in the women’s Serie A and will begin their campaign against AC Milan on 26 September.

The club’s decision to extend Picchi’s contract means she will remain part of the team as she focuses on her treatment and eventual return to football.
