UCL: Musiala returns as Bayern thrash Bodo-Glimt 5-0

Jamal Musiala marked his return to Bayern Munich’s starting XI with a goal as the German champions cruised to a 5-0 victory over Bodo-Glimt in the Champions League on Thursday.

Michael Olise scored twice, while Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies were also on target as Bayern produced a dominant second-half display to maintain their perfect start to the competition.

The match was particularly significant for Musiala, who returned to the starting lineup after missing two games following his revelation that he was dealing with a neurological condition that had caused him to collapse during two pre-season matches.

The Germany international opened the scoring shortly after half-time, reacting quickest to a blocked Kane effort before firing into the far corner.

His teammates immediately surrounded and embraced him in celebration as he marked his comeback with a goal.

Kane doubled Bayern’s advantage just after the hour mark, heading in an Olise free-kick to extend his scoring run in the Champions League to eight consecutive matches.

Bayern then took control in the final 15 minutes, scoring three more goals to turn the victory into a rout.

Davies made it 3-0 with a powerful long-range strike before Olise added two spectacular goals, including a superb effort from 25 yards into the top-left corner.

The France international completed his brace in stoppage time with another impressive finish to cap a commanding performance.

Bodo-Glimt, who reached the last 16 of the Champions League last season, had frustrated Bayern for much of the opening half with a deep defensive block.

Their resistance eventually collapsed after the break, and their night ended on a further sour note when Odin Bjortuft was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul with three minutes remaining.

Bayern’s victory also extended their remarkable record in Champions League opening matches to 24 consecutive wins, a run dating back to 2002.

Coach Vincent Kompany made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Schalke on Saturday, bringing Musiala, Kane and Olise into the starting lineup.

The emphatic victory gives Bayern a strong start to another Champions League campaign, while Musiala’s return provides further encouragement after his recent health setback.
