Albanese announces New Australian cabinet, sworn In on May 13th

Re-elected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday the formation of his new cabinet, which will be sworn in on May 13th.

“I intend to recommend to the governor general, Her Excellency Sam Mostyn, the following makeup of the ministry to be sworn in tomorrow at 9 a.m. (23:00 GMT). It will be followed by a full ministry meeting here in Parliament House,’’ Albanese told a briefing.

Albanese stated that the distribution of ministerial portfolios followed the standard caucus procedure.

He highlighted the Australian Labour Party’s significant victory, securing 92 seats in the lower house – the highest in the party’s history – and anticipating at least 28 seats in the upper house.

Key ministers from the previous cabinet, including Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Treasurer Jim Chalmers, will retain their positions.

Other returning ministers in their previous roles include Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Tony Burke, and Education Minister Jason Clare.

However, Albanese also announced several changes to ministerial portfolios. Michelle Rowland, former Communications Minister, will take on the role of Attorney-General, while Murray Watt, former Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, will now head the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water. 

This victory allows Albanese to continue as Prime Minister and form a new government for the next three years. The leader of the Liberal-National Coalition, Peter Dutton, conceded defeat and congratulated Albanese on his win.
