Dangote Group mourns as BBNaija winner Phyna’s sister dies from truck accident injuries
The Dangote Group has expressed profound grief over the passing of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna. Ruth died in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, after battling complications from injuries sustained in an accident involving a Dangote truck.
The tragic incident occurred on August 13 near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, when Ruth was struck by one of the company’s trucks.
The accident led to the amputation of her leg and a prolonged period of intensive medical care. Despite multiple interventions and financial support extended by the Dangote Group and its insurance partners, she was confirmed dead at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.
In an official statement, the conglomerate disclosed that plans were already underway to fly Ruth abroad for advanced treatment.

According to the company, arrangements had been concluded for her transfer to India for further medical procedures once doctors granted clearance, but her condition deteriorated before the journey could be made.
“The company has been fully responsible for all medical and financial expenses since the accident, while providing consistent support to the Otabor family throughout this ordeal,” the statement read in part.
It added that the tragedy underscores Dangote Group’s resolve to uphold safety, accountability, and compassion in its operations.
The Otabor family, through their solicitors, formally announced Ruth’s death, describing it as a painful and irreparable loss. Phyna, who had earlier appealed for her sister’s urgent transfer abroad, is yet to make an official public statement on the tragedy.
The passing of Ruth has sparked widespread sympathy from fans, well-wishers, and members of the public, many of whom have taken to social media to mourn alongside the Otabor family.
