Edo APC’s disinformation campaign threatens democracy post-election

When a party as powerful as the APC stoops to such tactics, the fabric of our electoral system is at risk of tearing apart. Their refusal to respect tribunal orders and to allow the PDP fair access to election materials is not just a political maneuver—it’s a declaration of war on the democratic process.

In a troubling chapter of Nigeria’s political landscape, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State is currently engaged in a campaign of disinformation and propaganda following the contentious September 2024 governorship election.

Rather than fostering a climate of reflection and accountability, the APC has resorted to a strategy of deceit that has escalated to unprecedented levels.

During a recent press conference broadcast by Arise News, APC Edo Chairman Jarrett Tenebe leveled serious accusations against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that they were responsible for the very obstruction and intimidation tactics that the APC has been employing.

This strategy of “gaslighting” has raised eyebrows, as it reflects a troubling attempt to shift blame while undermining democratic processes in the state.

The APC’s tactics have included attempts to delay justice and obstruct the PDP’s access to crucial election materials.

Reports indicate that the party has engaged in frivolous legal maneuvers and deliberate obstruction of access to equipment like the Bimodal Voter Authentication System (BVAS), all aimed at preventing the PDP from gathering evidence to challenge the election results.

Despite their claims, it is the APC supporters who have been reported intimidating officials at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices, creating chaos while accusing the PDP of similar misconduct.

This alarming pattern of projection mirrors the Yoruba saying about a thief who, caught in the act, accuses the surprised farmer of theft.

Furthermore, Tenebe’s claims regarding an alleged violent attack involving PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo and Governor Godwin Obaseki have not been independently verified and seem suspiciously timed to align with the APC’s ongoing obstructionist tactics.

As the PDP seeks to gather evidence and pursue legal remedies, the APC appears intent on muddying the waters, creating confusion to weaken the PDP’s case.

Their strategy includes delaying access to crucial materials and deflecting attention from their own actions by falsely accusing the PDP.

This campaign of deception not only threatens the integrity of the election process but also undermines the very fabric of democracy in Edo State.

The APC’s refusal to adhere to tribunal orders and allow fair access to election materials signals a blatant disregard for democratic norms.

The situation calls for vigilance from the public and a united front in support of the PDP and others advocating for electoral integrity.

The tribunal process remains a vital avenue for uncovering the truth, but the stakes are high.

The APC’s tactics serve as a reminder of democracy’s fragility and the need for active engagement to protect it.

As this disinformation campaign unfolds, it is crucial for the citizens of Edo State and Nigeria at large to recognize the gravity of the situation.

History will judge those who attempt to distort the will of the people, and it is imperative that truth prevails amidst the cacophony of lies.
