The worsening security crisis in Edo State has drawn the attention of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, who has publicly raised concerns over the escalating violence and insecurity gripping the state.
Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, joins a growing number of prominent Edo sons and daughters in calling for urgent Federal Government intervention, as criminal activities have reportedly claimed the lives of at least 35 innocent citizens and caused the destruction of properties worth billions of naira in just two weeks.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Oshiomhole described the security situation as dire, declaring that “Edo State is under siege.”
He expressed concern that Governor Monday Okpebholo has been overwhelmed by the crisis and has failed in his fundamental duty of protecting lives and property.
His remarks further validate the stance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, which has consistently argued that Governor Okpebholo has lost control of governance and is struggling to manage the deteriorating security situation.

Reports from across Edo’s three senatorial districts—Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South—indicate a disturbing rise in violent attacks, kidnappings, and other criminal activities.
The state has become a hotspot for criminal elements who now view it as a weak link in Nigeria’s security network.
The PDP has criticized Okpebholo’s administration, accusing him of being unprepared for governance and incapable of addressing the security threats facing the state.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Chris Osa Nehikhare, the party questioned Okpebholo and his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, over their previous dismissal of security concerns.
“What do Okpebholo and his team have to say now that their own political godfather has admitted to the total breakdown of security under their administration?” the PDP statement read.
The party also contrasted Okpebholo’s handling of security with that of his predecessor, former Governor Godwin Obaseki, whom they credited with establishing one of the most effective security frameworks in the country.
According to the PDP, Edo State was once regarded as one of Nigeria’s safest places to live and do business under Obaseki’s leadership.
Calling on Okpebholo to seek guidance from Obaseki, the PDP urged the governor to set aside political differences and prioritize the safety of Edo residents.
“Instead of arrogance and blame games, we urge Senator Okpebholo to humble himself and seek help from Obaseki, who has shown effective leadership in tackling crime and ensuring the security of Edo people,” Nehikhare stated.
As insecurity continues to escalate, many Edo residents are looking to the government for immediate and decisive action to restore peace and order.
