Former agriculture minister, Audu Ogbeh, dies at 78
Nigeria has lost one of its most respected statesmen as Chief Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, passed away at the age of 78.
The elder statesman died on Saturday, August 9, 2025, bringing an end to a distinguished career in public service that spanned decades. His family confirmed the news in an official statement, expressing profound sorrow over the loss.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Chief Audu Ogbeh,” the statement read.
“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set.”

Chief Ogbeh was widely regarded for his commitment to agricultural development, rural empowerment, and national progress.
During his tenure as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, he championed policies aimed at boosting local food production, supporting farmers, and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imports.
His leadership was marked by a deep belief in self-sufficiency and the transformative power of agriculture in national development.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends, colleagues, and well-wishers across the country and beyond, while requesting privacy during this period of mourning.
Chief Audu Ogbeh’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian politics and agricultural policy, but his vision and principles are expected to remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
