Oyo school abduction: Makinde seeks UN probe, independent inquiry(Video)

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on the United Nations (UN) and other international human rights and accountability organisations to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from Ahoro Esinle School in Oriire Local Government Area, saying the incident deserves scrutiny beyond Nigeria’s domestic institutions.

Speaking in a video released by the Oyo State Government, the governor said an independent international investigation would help establish the full circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and determine whether there were security lapses, collusion or other factors that contributed to the attack.

Makinde stressed the need for justice for the victims and their families, noting that the findings of an independent inquiry could strengthen public confidence in the outcome of investigations.

According to the governor, questions surrounding the abduction should be thoroughly examined to determine whether there was any failure in the security architecture or any form of collaboration that enabled the kidnappers to carry out the operation.

He maintained that uncovering the truth behind the incident is essential not only to ensure accountability but also to prevent similar attacks on schools and other vulnerable institutions.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to the safety of residents and pledged continued support for security agencies working to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.

The abduction of the pupils and teachers from Ahoro Esinle School drew widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the safety of educational institutions across Nigeria, where schoolchildren have increasingly become targets for criminal gangs seeking ransom.

Makinde’s appeal for international involvement comes amid growing calls from stakeholders for a comprehensive review of security measures aimed at protecting schools and rural communities from attacks.

An independent investigation, he argued, would provide greater transparency, identify any institutional weaknesses and ensure that those responsible for the abduction are held accountable.

Meanwhile, authorities have continued efforts to improve security across Oyo State while supporting affected families and strengthening measures to prevent future incidents.
