Police nab Bishop’s driver for alleged role in abduction, SUV theft
A man identified as the personal driver to an Anglican Bishop in Delta State, popularly referred to as Bishop Chinedu, has been arrested for allegedly conspiring with kidnappers in a plot that led to the cleric’s death.
The suspect was paraded alongside an alleged accomplice at the headquarters of the Anambra State Police Command, where journalists gathered as police operatives brought the two men into the premises under tight security.
Addressing reporters, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the arrest but declined to disclose full details, stating that investigations were still underway.
“Don’t mind, details will be revealed to you soon after we conclude our investigations, as they have just been arrested,” Orutugu said.
According to preliminary findings, the principal suspect—said to be the bishop’s private driver—allegedly connived with a group of kidnappers to dispossess his employer of a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV.
However, the situation reportedly spiraled out of control, resulting in the death of the clergyman while the vehicle was stolen.
Police sources indicated that after the incident in Delta State, the suspects transported the stolen vehicle to Anambra State in a bid to sell it.
“They brought the vehicle into Anambra to sell it, and the man you see with him was the one who wanted to buy the vehicle, but in the process, they were arrested,” the police commissioner disclosed.
Authorities did not reveal the exact circumstances surrounding the bishop’s death or whether other suspects remain at large.
Journalists were prevented from speaking directly with the suspects, as police operatives maintained that it would be inappropriate to grant access while investigations are ongoing.
Security analysts say the case underscores the persistent threat posed by kidnapping syndicates operating across state lines, often with insider collaboration.
The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to unravel the full extent of the alleged conspiracy and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
