Wawrinka sidelined with foot operation
Injury struggles are continuing to hamper three-time tennis Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and the Swiss will be out “for a few weeks” as he recovers from a foot operation.
The veteran, who turns 36 on Sunday, has struggled for consistent fitness since last winning an ATP title in 2017.
But he has bounced back for 21st in the world having once fallen outside the top 250.
“After having some problems in my left foot for a while, I have decided to do a small procedure on it,” Wawrinka said on social media on Thursday.
“Everything went well … can’t wait to start practising again soon.”
Former world number three Wawrinka won the Australian, French and US Opens in the best spell of his career from 2014 to 2016.
