Bristow helicopter crashes in Lagos, 11 survive

A Bristow helicopter has crashed with nine passengers and two crew members on board.

Sources have confirmed that the chopper was en route Lagos from Port Harcourt when it eventually crashed into the ocean close to Lagos.

When contacted,  a source close to Bristow Helicopters told National Daily that it was not a crash but a controlled ditching.

The source said the pilot of the helicopter  with registration number 5N-BJQ decided to ditch into the ocean when he noticed wrong with the chopper. He explained that  controlled ditching is a controlled emergency landing of a helicopter on water. It is prompted by a sudden on-set emergency, where continued safe flight to the nearest adequate landing location of even suitable landing not cannot be ascertained.

The crash is coming barely six months after Bristow’s Sikorsky S-76C with registration number 5N – BDG – 760540 crashed at Oworoshoki of Lagos Lagoon.

Unlike the 2015 crash that claimed six of the 12 people on board, all the 11 people involved in today’s incident survived, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The site of the crash as at the time of compiling the report was yet to be ascertained.
