FG, Labour, deliberate on new labour laws
The Federal Government, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) at the recently concluded 3-day Retreat in Lagos deliberated on Nigeria’s Labour Laws with a view at making it conform to international best practices and current realities in the world.
The Retreat which held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, was declared open by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator (Dr.) Chris Nwabueze Ngige, while the technical session of the Retreat was chaired by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN).
The 3-day Retreat which was attended by the leadership of NLC, TUC, NECA with the International Labour Organization (ILO) providing technical support, deliberated on the five National Labour Bills- Collective Labour Relations Bills, Labour Standard Bill, Labour Institution Bill, Occupational Safety and Health Bill and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (Amendment) Act.
After intense deliberation, the government and the other critical stakeholders agreed on most of the provisions, and also promised to finalized outstanding issues at a validation meeting scheduled for Abuja in a yet to be announced date.
In a communique issued after the Retreat and signed by Festus Keyamu, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, President of the NLC, Comreade Quadri Olaleye, President of TUC and Dr. Timothy Olawale, DG of NECA, they all agreed that the final outcome of their position would be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative action.
