Delta Govt. begins process of ending herdsmen attack, recruits Fulani elders for peace campaign
The Delta State government has commenced the process of ending attacks by Fulani herdsmen in the state. Residents of the state are demanding evacuation of Fulani herdsmen from the state for attacks on rural communities, and herding on their farmlands, and destroying crops. The state government, however, assured the people that the process to tame the herdsmen who take laws into their hands is ongoing.
The Director-General of Security Matters, David Tonwei, at a peace meeting in Asaba, revealed that the state government has proactively mandated Fulani elders to lead the campaign against violence and attacks by herdsmen among their kinsmen.
The Director-General on Security Matters, David Tonwei, made the revelation at the public hearing on the Anti-open Grazing Bill by the Delta State House of Assembly towards putting an end to herdsmen trespassing with their cattle into farmlands or along rural roads.
Several farmers had complained of the violent behaviours of herdsmen in their communities and the effect on the soil nutrients, crops and their farmlands.
The Delta State Government is considering ending herders’ incursions into farms; residents of the State are also demanding that the Hausa/Fulani metal scavengers should be stopped in the state; the residents complain that the scavengers invade homes and steal portable metal and household appliances.
