The parallel state congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State was on Saturday disrupted by armed men who invaded the venue shooting to disperse delegates from polling points.
The armed men had disrupted the parallel state congress on Saturday conducted by the APC faction in Ogun State led by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, currently, Senator representing Ogun Central District in the National Assembly. The venue of the parallel congress held at the palace ground of the Alake of Ake in Abeokuta, was thrown into disarray by the gunmen who stormed the palace ground.
Delegates at the congress had to flee for safety, vacating the venue abruptly.
The Police were, however, invited for intervention; they, thereafter, restored normalcy and the congress continued.
The parallel APC state congress conducted by the faction led by Governor Dapo Abiodun was said to be peaceful. The governor’s parallel state congress is being conducted at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, with tight security at the venue. Security operatives are being deployed to strategic locations to maintain law and order.
Hundreds of delegates were nominated from the 20 local government areas in the three senatorial districts of Ogun State for the parallel state congress. About 100 aspirants are contesting for the 35 positions into the state executive committee of the party.
It was disclosed that the APC faction led by the Ogun Governor had considered the adoption of consensus candidates for the state party leadership in line with the party guidelines. However, the endorsed consensus candidates may face election where there is no agreement or to receive wider endorsement from delegates.
