How Chelsea showed the mark of champions to return to EPL summit
Chelsea travelled to Brentford Community Stadium to play guest to Brentford who have only lost a game in the Premier League this season with tense pressure especially after Liverpool and Manchester City have both recorded convincing results to earlier topple the Blues on Saturday.
The Stamford Bridge club got their first shock when Bryan Mbeumo hit the post for Brentford in the first half.
Meanwhile, Timo Werner had missed two fine chances for the Blues, but interestingly, Chelsea went into the break ahead courtesy Chilwell’s half volley from just inside the area scoring his third goal in three games for club and country.
Chelsea were served another shocker when Mbeumo yet again hit the post in the second half before Mendy saved brilliantly three times late on, first from sub Saman Ghoddos, then with his face from Pontus Jansson at point-blank range, before tipping over Christian Norgaard’s stunning overhead kick in stoppage time.
Brentford’s defeat by Chelsea had seen them lose just for the second time after eight games to stay seventh.
Chelsea however have got their goalie Mendy to thank for his heroics as they returned to Stamford Bridge with the maximum three points while regaining EPL top spot.
