Rainfall submerges international airport, obstructs flight from landing
Heavy rainfall on Thursday submerged the Chennai International Airport in India. The emerging flood led to suspension of flight arrivals.
However, Chennai International Airport ordered that flights departure will continue as scheduled.
The heavy seasonal rains historically caused disruption of air traffic in Chennai, India.
The Chennai International Airport in a tweet stated that all flights arriving between 1315 IST and 1800 IST were suspended on Thursday, November 11, due to the severe rains and heavy crosswinds.
It was gathered that earlier in the week, a red alert was issued in Chennai as many areas of the city were submerged in almost knee-deep water following heavy seasonal rains that historically caused disruption of air traffic.
It was disclosed that no fewer than 14 people lost their lives in the incessant rains across Tamil Nadu.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had revealed that the rain was caused by a depression in Bay of Bengal, which was moving towards Tamil Nadu. IMD state that it will continue to move west-northwestwards and cross the region between north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts around Chennai by Thursday, November 11 evening.
