Lawan faces opposition as loyalists impose him as Senate presidential consensus
Nigeria’s divided Senate has been further splintered by the presidential ambition of its leader Sen. President Ahmad Lawan.
Lawan will buy his nomination form Wednesday, thereby joining the league of the ruling APC presidential aspirants.
Before now, the upper chamber was splintered into three: Sen Kashim Shettima leading the Bola Tinubu camp; Sen. Ali Ndume championing Minster Rotimi Amaechi’s cause; Sen Kabiru Gaya for V.P Yemi Osinbajo.
Lawan now has his own forerunner, too. And they have big dreams.
According to a report by the Daily Trust, the bellwethers of Lawan’s presidency want to push the entre upper house to make him their consensus candidate.
The APC has the house majority—71. The opposition PDP has 37 while YPP has one.
Among those behind the consensus push are Senator Yusuf Yusuf (APC, Taraba), Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger) and a former lawmaker, Senator Abdullahi Gumel.
Apart from senators whose positions have never been hidden, there are others who are equally as ambitious as Lawan. This further makes the consensus plot a tough job for his foot soldiers.
Sen. Ibikunle Amosun and his colleague Rochas Okorocha have declared their intention for the presidency, too.
