US agrees to repatriate more $23m Abacha Loot to Nigeria
The United States has agreed to repatriate over $23 million of Abacha loot to Nigeria. The US government, represented by the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, signed an agreement on the return of over $23 million of the Abacha loot, on Tuesday in the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami SAN.
Malami signed on behalf of the Nigerian government.
The Justice Minister emphasized that the recovered fund when returned will be invested in three ongoing projects by the Federal Government, which include the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna road and the 2nd Niger Bridge.
The US in 2020, agreed with Jersey to return over $308 million in confiscated funds to Nigeria.
Also, Switzerland, in 2006, repatriated about $723 million of Abacha loot to Nigeria.
