Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Tuesday, urged motorists to avoid night travels and conveying inflammable materials, to save lives and property.

FRSC Sector Commander, Enugu State Command, Mr Joseph Toby, gave the advice in Enugu while briefing journalists on the activities to commemorate African Road Safety Day and 2022 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

The 2022 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which runs between Nov. 15 and Nov. 20, is themed: “Justice”; while the slogan for the week-long activities is “Remember, Support and Act”.

Toby urged the motoring public and general road users to do all to avoid incidents of traffic accidents, adding that safety should be top priority for everyone.

He said: “We owe it a duty to be alive for the sake of our loved ones and families. So everyone must plan his/her journey on time and leave early for the journey.

“Night journey should be avoided due to obvious implications of difficulty in getting help if the vehicle develops fault or breakdown at night and one being a victim of men of the underworld and kidnappers.”

The commander also advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were repaired and made 100 per cent road worthy, adding: “No little fault should be ignored or managed.”

“There is the need for motorists to do self-inspection of their vehicles before leaving in the morning and ensure that all vehicle parts are properly fitted,” he said.

The sector commander said that the activities to commemorate the day would include advocacy visits to hospitals by members of Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association and other stakeholders, a workshop with stakeholders, Jumat prayer.

He said that the week would be concluded with a church service on Sunday.
