Bus driver docked over alleged reckless driving, killing 2 road users

A 39-year old commercial bus driver, Sunday Emedu, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged reckless driving that caused the death of two road users.

The defendant is facing a six-count charge bordering on reckless driving, driving without vehicle licence, driving without road worthiness certificate, causing damage to property, causing bodily harm and causing death.

The Prosecutor, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 10, at Odo Eran Bus Stop, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

He said that Emedu, drove in a reckless manner, caused the death of a motorcyclist, Mr Peter Onyesi, 35, and a pedestrian, Mr Godwin Babodor, 45.

The prosecutor told the court that the defendant’s reckless driving also led to damagng Onyesi’s Bajaj motorcycle.

”A pedestrian identified as Mr Balogun, was also injured as a result of his reckless driving.

”He drove his bus without a drivers’ licence and requisite vehicle particulars,” he said.

Uche said that the offences contravened Sections 4, 20, 32, and 45 of the Lagos State Traffic Law, 2013

He said the offences also contravened Sections 25, and 124 of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 124, Law of Lagos State, 2003.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr L.J.K Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

He held that one of the sureties must be a landlord in Lagos, while the other must be gainfully employed.

Layeni ordered that the case file should be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

He adjourned the case to April 12.
