Abesan Estate declares state of emergency on security over incessant robbery attacks
The Abesan Estate Residents Association (AERA), the umbrella body for all residents in the Low Cost Housing Estate at Ipaja, one of the biggest government estates in Lagos has declared a state of emergency on security following incessant robbery attacks on residents in recent times.
In a joint meeting held on Friday, 15th September 2023, the executive of AERA and chairmen various sectors within Abesan Estate declared a state of emergency on the estate’s security.
In a communique issued by the PRO of AERA, Olufemi Odeyemi after the stakeholders’ meeting, the decision came in the wake of recent events that have caused concern among the residents.
He said residents have been urged to heighten their awareness and prioritize their security to stem the tide.
“It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may help in apprehending the perpetrators, who are believed to be among us.
“To effectively address the challenges posed by these marauders and guarantee the safety of the community, security measures have been put in place. These measures aim to halt the activities of those causing disturbances in our environment.

Earlier in his statement, President of AERA, Elder M.A.O Kehinde said the decision to declare the state of emergency on security has become imperative as reports of attacks on properties have become one too many in recent times.
He said several reports have been lodged at the police station, but that residents too need to be proactive in security measures because the police too have been stretched too thin.
“We too as residents must take proactive measures to protect ourselves and properties from these marauders. In the last two weeks, several sectors within the estate have been attacked with several vehicles vandalized, yet no suspect has been arrested yet.
“While we wait for the police to do their thing, we as residents must also not keep quiet. If we notice any suspicious movement within our neighborhoods, let us speak out.
“We’re also working with the police and our various CSOs to put adequate measures in place to tackle this menace,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Chair of Chairmen in the estate, Mr. Moshood Awogbade, said various chairmen in the sector are also meeting to find a lasting solution to the insecurity in the estate.
He also urged all residents to cooperate with the central body in finding a solution to the porous state of the estate.
