A front line activist in Nigeria, Senator Shehu Sani, has taken a swipe at political godfathers in Nigeria, saying that political godfather is a cultist relation.

According to Shehu Sani, “It’s a cultish relationship founded on state capture, absolute control of political power, mutual protection and plunder of state resources.”

He declared: “Nigerian political godfathers have a lot in common with their Italian mafia counterparts.”

Sani in a statement emphasised that

“Most Nigerian Political Godfathers don’t anoint their successors on the ground of competence;” noting that they anoint and impose them on the ground of loyalty, loyalty not to the state but to lords of power.

Sani stated that “trouble naturally erupts when the lackey, driven by conscience, overbearing influence or new realities decides to revolt against the unconscionable covenant.”

Shehu Sani issued the statement in response to the crisis in Rivers State over the plan to impeach the governor by the State House of Assembly and the resistance outburst.

The battle line was drawn between Governor Sim Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Myesom Wike – the godfather in this instance.

Wike and Fubara were reconciled in Abuja on Tuesday by President Bola Tinubu.
